What a parking ticket costs in York, what it costs to park, what a resident permit costs, who enforces it and how to challenge one.

City of York CouncilNorth YorkshireEngland

York prices on-street parking so that the first two hours are dear and the third is cheap: £5 for an hour, £10 for two, and £11.50 for three — but you may only stay beyond two hours after 3pm. Fridays, Saturdays and event days cost more, and every payment is by PayByPhone, with a 15p service charge. York residents who pay council tax to the city can buy a Minster Badge for £45, valid two years, which cuts the hourly rate from £5 to £3.50. Resident permits come in three rates by vehicle, and the low-emission rate is exactly 20 per cent below standard.

Common questions

How much does it cost to park on the street in York?
£5.00 for up to an hour, £10.00 for up to two and £11.50 for up to three, Sunday to Thursday, 8am to 6pm. On Fridays, Saturdays and event days it is £5.50, £10.90 and £13.90. Stays over two hours are only allowed after 3pm. Evening parking, 6pm to 11.59pm, is £4.00.
Why is the third hour so cheap in York?
Because the bands are priced by stay, not by the hour: two hours cost £10.00 and three cost £11.50, so the third hour adds £1.50. It is only available after 3pm, when a stay beyond two hours is allowed.
Is the Minster Badge worth it?
If you park on-street regularly, quickly. It costs £45 for two years and cuts an hour on a weekday from £5.00 to £3.50 — £1.50 saved each time, so it pays for itself after 30 one-hour stays. It also lets electric cars park free overnight while charging at fast chargepoints. You must pay council tax directly to City of York Council.
How much is a resident parking permit in York?
£115 a year for a first household permit at the standard rate, £277 for a second and £577.50 for a third. Low-emission vehicles get exactly 20 per cent off: £92, £221.60 and £462. A premium rate also applies to some vehicles: £190, £411 and £823. A three-month first permit is £35, so four of them would cost £140 against £115 for a year.
Which cars get York's low-emission permit discount?
Light passenger vehicles in vehicle tax bands A to C (up to 120g/km CO2), and electric or LPG vehicles. The discount is applied automatically and the permit is vehicle-specific.
How much is a parking ticket in York?
£70 or £50, depending on the contravention. York adds £40 if the car is clamped and £105 if it is removed.
Can I pay for parking in York with cash?
Not on-street: every on-street bay is paid through PayByPhone. There is a 15p service charge per payment, and optional text reminders cost 20p each.
